State University of New York Upstate in Syracuse NY has one of the leading research institutions in the area of retina research,  particularly in the field of inherited retinal disorders like Retinitis Pigmentosa and in the field of Macular Degeneration.  With the recent developments in stem cell research and artificial vision and the recent FDA approval of the first prosthetic retina, Dr. Allison Jarstad will be learning at one of the foremost research and training eye institutions in the nation.

“I couldn’t be happier for my daughter, “ said Dr. John Jarstad recently.  Ophthalmology is one of the most difficult specialties in medicine to match for advanced training in all of medicine.  The fact that Allison’s grandfather (and my father) is a Syracuse alum, is an added connection.”
