What Are IOLs?

IOL stands for intraocular lens, an artificial lens used to replace your eye’s clouded natural lens during cataract surgery. This well established procedure restores vision and can reduce how much you rely on glasses.

During surgery, your eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a permanent IOL chosen to fit your lifestyle. Your doctor will help you decide which lens makes sense for you. If you’re active in sports, for example, a monofocal lens that gives sharp distance vision might be the right call, though you’d likely still need glasses for close up tasks.

Standard monofocal lenses provide clear vision at a single range, near, distance, or intermediate. Choosing one means clear vision at that one range, with glasses still needed for other activities.

Once implanted, an IOL becomes a permanent part of the eye. Premium lenses cost more than monofocal ones, but they offer the advantage of restoring both near and far vision.

Advanced IOL Options at Evergreen Eye Center

Evergreen Eye Center’s cataract surgeons offer a range of premium IOL options to match different vision goals.

Multifocal Vision

Multifocal lenses fall under the premium IOL category and may not be fully covered by insurance. Most insurance plans cover standard cataract surgery using a monofocal lens.

Patients who choose a standard monofocal lens will still need glasses for certain activities. Those who choose a multifocal or other premium lens often reduce their reliance on glasses or contacts significantly.

Results vary from person to person, but a premium lens can mean real savings on glasses and supplies over time. Several types of multifocal IOLs exist, and your eye doctor can help you find the one suited to your lifestyle and interests.

Light Adjustable IOLs

The light adjustable lens is another alternative to a traditional implant. This premium, state of the art lens lets your eye doctor fine tune the lens power after surgery to achieve your desired vision outcome.

It’s made of a photosensitive material that changes shape when exposed to ultraviolet light, which is what allows your doctor to customize your vision after surgery. The light adjustable lens can improve vision at all distances, further reducing the need for visual aids afterward.

Distance Vision (Astigmatism Correction)

For patients with astigmatism, eye doctors often recommend a toric lens. A toric IOL corrects moderate to high astigmatism, and it’s available in both standard monofocal form and in many premium multifocal lens options.
