Premium Intraocular Lenses

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that can be used to replace a patient’s natural ones. Evergreen Eye Center offers several types of premium IOLs that can be used to treat a range of vision problems.

Applications for premium IOLs

Cataract Surgery

IOLs can replace a patient’s natural lens when it is removed as part of a surgical procedure to correct cataracts. Most cataract surgery patients see a marked improvement in their vision after receiving IOLs.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Recently, intraocular lenses started being used in refractive lens exchange, an alternative to laser surgery to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and even presbyopia (difficulty switching between different focal points). Many people who do not qualify for laser vision correction may be able to pursue this option instead. An Evergreen Eye Center surgeon can discuss with you whether you are a candidate for this procedure.

Types of Premium Intraocular Lenses

Accommodating IOLs

Accommodating intraocular lenses are capable of responding to the muscle movements made by the eye as it shifts between different focal lengths. As a result, accommodating IOLs – such as the FDA-approved Crystalens® IOL – allow patients to see more clearly at near, medium and far distances.

Accommodating IOLs can be used to treat presbyopia – the reduced ability to switch between focal points as the muscle responsible for the switch ages – and in many patients can reduce or even eliminate the need for bifocals.

Multifocal Refractive IOLs

Multifocal intraocular lenses, such as Advanced Medical Optics’ ReZoom™ IOLs, are designed with five different optic zones, each with specialized functions for different lighting and focal distances. These zones allow the lens to provide clear vision in most situations of daily life, from driving at night to reading fine print.

Recently, a new type of aspheric multifocal refractive IOL became available, which is designed to increase contrast sensitivity and improve night vision.

ReSTOR®

ReSTOR® intraocular lenses use apodization and refractive and diffractive technology to interpret the amount of light entering the eye and focus it on the appropriate part of the retina. ReSTOR® IOLs allow patients to see clearly at any distance – four out of five patients who receive ReSTOR® lenses do not need glasses or bifocals.

Other Types of Intraocular Lenses

Aspheric lenses

Aspheric IOLs can provide better quality vision than standard IOLs because they are designed to reduce or eliminate spherical aberration. This technology is used in most patients who have cataract surgery at evergreen eye center.

Toric lenses

Toric intraocular lenses can be used specifically to treat astigmatism in cataract patients. This new development has helped many patients reduce the amount of astigmatism after cataract surgery resulting in better vision.
