What Are Cataracts? Age-Related Cloudy Vision
The term "cataract" refers to the eye's lens becoming clouded as a normal part of the aging process. This condition occurs because over time, natural proteins in the eye's structure clump together, interfering with the normal vision process and causing vision to become cloudy or hazy. Unfortunately, cataracts affect almost everyone in their 60's or beyond.
Signs that you may be affected by a cataract include poor night vision, dulled color vision, haziness, sensitivity to light, or halos around objects. However, some cataracts do not cause any symptoms until they are in their advanced stages, which is why the Eye M.D.s at Evergreen Eye Center recommend regular vision checkups.
Keeping Your Vision for Years to Come
Cataract Treatment Options
In their earliest stages, cataracts can be managed with stronger glasses or bifocals, magnification devices, and improved lighting during everyday tasks. For those whose cataracts have progressed beyond these early stages, however, there are a number of different treatment options. You may wish to consider surgery when your vision becomes moderately to severely impaired, or your vision changes are significant enough to affect your daily life.
Surgery to remove the clouded lenses is the only way to permanently treat cataracts and halt the decline in vision. New methods and materials have made cataract surgery one of the most common and effective surgical procedures in recent years. During the first phase of cataract treatment, your eye surgeon will remove the clouded portion of the lens. In the second phase, your surgeon will provide you with another way to maintain your vision, called implantable lenses or intraocular lenses (IOLs). IOLs are small, thin, plastic corrective lenses that are implanted in the eye, allowing you to see and focus clearly again.
See Clearly Again with Implantable/Intraocular Lenses
Evergreen Eye Center is at the forefront of today’s vision technology, offering a variety of implantable lenses with different functions designed to treat all different kinds of post-cataract vision. With advances in technology, implantable intraocular lenses are providing people with sharper post-cataract vision than ever before. Please contact us today to find out which IOL would be the appropriate alternative for you.
Crystalens®
One of the most exciting new vision technologies is the FDA-approved Crystalens® IOL, which allows the eye to focus on near, middle, and distant objects, often without the need for bifocals. Crystalens® is considered an “accommodating” lens, which means that it functions with the natural muscular structures of the eye to focus at all points, near and far. Crystalens® helps most patients enjoy a range of vision that is clear and stable, without the need for additional bifocals or reading glasses.
ReSTOR®
Evergreen Eye Center is pleased to offer the highly advanced and effective ReSTOR® lens. This patented IOL employs apodization, diffractive, and refractive technologies to improve vision. Diffraction technology is the process of “bending” light to focus on different points; apodization refers to the tiny steps in diffraction radiating out from the center of the ReSTOR® lens, like ripples on water. By combining these technologies, the ReSTOR® lens is able to interpret the level of light entering the eye and focus it on the appropriate part of the retina. The result is clear, precise vision, both near and far. Four out of five patients who receive ReSTOR® lenses do not need to wear glasses or bifocals.
ReZoom™
The ReZoom™ lens is a second-generation IOL that offers true multifocal capabilities. ReZoom™ IOLs are designed with five unique “optic zones” with specialized functions for different lighting and focal distances. These zones allow the lens to provide clear vision in most situations of daily life, from driving at night to reading fine print. The multiple focal points provided by the optic zones allow most people to see well… anywhere, anytime.
